You guys, I need to get something off my chest. I have started down a dark and strange path. An action, nay, a hobby, that I previously believed I would NEVER partake in, has come to pass.
I don't know if I can ever go back. This brave new world seems full of danger and possible rejection from, you know, normal people.
I have... started reading and writing fan fiction.
*strings from Psycho start playing*
Really, though, has anyone had any experience with this? For me, it's been very weird. I like the idea of a world that already exists- some of the most popular ones are Harry Potter or Pokemon- and writing new characters and plotlines. I think that's cool.
But what I can't understand are the ones that focus on something tiny. Like, "OMG this character is gonna go on a DATE!" That's... good for you, I guess? Have fun?
And... yes, I think it's safe to say that the stereotypes you hear about fanfiction are pretty much true. There is a lot of weird stuff out there. Awful stuff. Disgusting, actually.
Dang, I cannot campaign for things. I always make it sound terrible! Good thing I don't sell cars or something.

Whenever I watch Star Wars, or play it; and Lord of the Rings I start down that path. I might do a Starwars one. We could be fanfiction brothers for a while if you want to set deadlines. They're really scary but if you stick to them they force you to work and are then affective.

*NEWSFLASH!* So not really a news flash. But Rick Riordan, who is a decent writer, is of course going to be doing a Norse mythology series. 2015 it looks like. But I have decided to beat him to the punch and spend this summer writing a short story in his style I think. I guess it's a pre-emptive fan fiction...

Did he do those ones about Greek and Egyptian mythology?

Yeah. They were funny, but there wasn't a whole lot of depth to them. All in all I thought that they were good reads.

Spectre…how could you?
Nah, I think I understand, a little? I've had friends that got really into fan fiction. I, personally, have not dabbled with it. Thinking about it kind of makes me sad in a respect because here are these wonderful pieces taken to, like you said, tiny things. But I suppose it's all practice. And if you have fun at it, too, all the better.

Yeah, it's weird like that. But I have found one really bright side; I found out how to search for the stories people liked the most. With a few exceptions, they're well-written, free of mistakes, and actually interesting to read. It kinda feels like an extension of the story itself, sometimes.

Oh, yes. Yes, yes, yes. We share a hidden love, Spectre. I don't write fanfiction - honestly, I find it too difficult to play in other people's worlds, and I'd rather spend that effort on my original work - but I used to. Back in like middle school. I was writing a "Marauders read Harry Potter" fic. Heh. Also a Harry Potter / Lord of the Rings crossover. I do still read fanfiction. I stopped for a while when I quit writing it, then started again a couple of months into college. I like reading fics that explore side or dark characters. Loki from the Avengers, Draco and Snape from Harry Potter. (I especially like the ones that explore an unexplained aspect of the story and manage to make it fit perfectly, so that I can accept it as part of the actual story.) It's amazing how much talent is out there, and how many people use fanfiction as their outlet. There are some really great stories out there, told by writers playing in someone else's world. It's not even a guilty pleasure for me, anymore. I have no shame in reading fanfiction. Honestly, I think an author has really, truly made it when fans are borrowing their worlds for a while. If at some point fanfiction is written using my worlds, I will be truly honored. (You just have to avoid the crazies. And if a story even hints of a self-insert, abandon ship!)

I used to read and write a bit of fan fiction but I've strayed away from it, lately. I've been thinking of starting it back up as a baby step to get back into writing, which I desperately need to do. Minecraft has distracted me for long enough!
