Excellent idea, using the news for inspiration.
In high school, I took a sci-fi/fantasy class. One of our assignments was to rewrite an article from the newspaper as if it was science fiction or fantasy. It was a blast, and actually gave me a really awesome idea (that I no longer remember, but I could probably go find that story - I'm sure it's saved on my computer somewhere).

Arrrr Saph your stories from school are making me wish I had gone to writing school too! You should see if you can find it though. Seems to me that even if nobody reads it at first, it's better to have it posted. Even if it's shit.
But yeah I read the news kind of obsessively - I'm so afraid something will Happen - and while I'm at it I find loads of fodder!

That was actually a high school class. Mostly I hated it. That assignment was fun, though. Most of my cool writing stories are from college. Eh, maybe I'll dig it up and post it here. That's a good habit, though. Knowing what's going on in the world. I tend to be the opposite, which I should really try to fix.

I saw this image earlier and it's inspiring me lh5.googleusercontent.com/-WhkSfXTjtko/UuFTASWn9wI/AAAAAAAADxY/b15T8LHgTMk/w426-h260/8.jpgI agree, but then you've got the other part where you're reading the news freaking out a little, but still reading headlines, kind of compulsively, though you know a) you're not going to like it, and b) there's nothing you can do about it anyway. And of course realization of b) doesn't feel all that great either. Though it is better to know, yeah. And nothing so far has made me feel more like an adult than discussing America/Syria relations with my favorite prof after class
