Not the version I grew up with but it's the best I've found on Youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lryRLRNkKG8The lyrics are online somewhere but what really gets me is this: Where in every chorus it's talking about how Billy will die in Kenora, and Jim will die in Winnipeg, and I will die in Montreal, and we assume the narrator is talking literally...but near the end we find out they die and the trenches and craters they die in are named after the towns they were born in...!!!! AND SO THEY DIED IN KENORA AND WINNIPEG AAAAAA LLike the part of me that spends too much time on the internet is like "OH MAN SO MUCH FEELS" but really I can't do that to this song; it would degrade it. Just listen to it and get some Kleenex to wipe your face and then come back here so we can talk about it.

Beautiful and tragic.
(The harmonies were gorgeous, too.)

My main problem. It's so weird to think that in 2014 we still have like physical wars with kids killing each other. Oh and Saph the harmonies are one of my favorite parts I wish I knew why, listening to one person sing a sad chorus is alright, but istenting to several people sing a sad chorus with harmony is just...impossible.

War is the most avoidable thing, and yet we can't seem to keep the world peaceful. There's always someone to spark it, and the rest of us just seem to fall in line. There's just something about the right harmony that makes a song that much more poignant. Speaking of gorgeous harmonies, have you heard any of Eric Whitacre's compositions? They're unbelievable. In particular, A Boy and a Girl. My choir sang this in high school, and I'm pretty sure it was every single person's favorite song that year. So, so hard to sing well, but just gorgeous.

Wow. And your choir sang this? Must've been super hard.
I asked Quora one time about when war actually was the answer. Majority of replies seemed to think that war is only the answer in REACTION to another war ie if a country is phsycially going to war against you you respond in kind. So if nobody ever went to war there'd be none. Weird.

There's a recording of us singing it on youtube somewhere. Not the best quality, but yeah. It was hard, but that's what made it so rewarding. You know when you hear a really incredible live performance, and you don't want it to end, and the whole audience is just silent for a moment before they start clapping? We had that, with that song, at one of our concerts. Best moment of my performing life. War is always caused by someone, but they always seem to have a reason that they think justifies it. And really, a lot of those reasons go back generations. Take Israel/Palestine. They're only fighting over that land because someone else decided that no, the Jews belong here now. Make the Muslims leave. And then, no, this land belongs to the Muslims. Make the Jews leave. And yes, it is a very important place to more than one religion, but I think the main reason that there's no Christian sect involved in that conflict (insofar as actually fighting over it to make it their own) is that the Christians were never essentially exiled to that area. I took a class called Middle Eastern Society and Culture in college, and the thing I remember most clearly is: It's all Britain's fault. They were the ones who decided that the Jews in their country should all move to Israel.

Nah, my voice isn't that good. It's more of a "choir" voice than a "band" voice. Does that make sense? I'm good with classical stuff, some musical theater, but not really pop/rock type stuff. Also my voice is very light. It doesn't stand up well against other voices. As a senior in high school, I was cast as a "daughter" in Fiddler on the Roof, while my freshman friend was cast as a "mother" because her voice was brassier than mine. We're both sopranos. You'd think that, considering the basic tenet of almost every religion is peace, we'd fight less over it.

Man there are loads of bands where the singer isn't 'classic' pop/rock! I mean even like Nightwish, their singer used to do opera. I'm sure something will come up Are there choir clubs to join? It seems like you really enjoyeed and it would be a shame if you couldn;'tkeep doing it

I haven't really sung for almost five years now... I enjoyed it, and I still sing in the car (and the shower) all the time, but that's enough for me. I guess my point was that my voice isn't really strong enough to carry solo vocals in any kind of group. I could sing Ave Maria for a judge, but I never got a single solo for a choir performance after middle school. It was fun while it lasted, but it's not something I miss too much anymore. (I miss doing musicals more, actually, but sadly my work schedule is too erratic to commit to any kind of rehearsals.) Thanks, though! It's always nice to hear that people have faith in me (even if you haven't ever heard me sing).
