Did any one else grow up reading Redwall? I just picked it up off of my shelf, I have all but one of them, and I think I might write a spiritual successor to it....

I remembered how much i love them. So the original series happens in a medieval era, and I think if i do it i will fast forward a couple hundred years and make it like flint lock black powder era. Redwall will still obviously be there though.

Oh, I loved those books. My favorite is probably still Martin the Warrior. Though Mattimeo comes close.
Mice with cannons would be amazing. Just yes.

MARTIN THE WARRIOR WAS THE WORST....... I loved it so much and then ROSE DIED.
I was an impressionable young lad. I will post a vague plotline one i got something going. I am thinking of the main character being a hare from salamandastron, and gun powder being discovered on a far a way island by vermin

The tragedy is probably the reason I liked it so much. I used to listen to the books on tape (yes, on tape, not CD). I would just lie on the floor in my room with my cat and listen to the stories. I don't know who the narrator was, but he was amazing.

Oh man I forgot about Rose. Jeepers. Heavy stuff for a series that was technically for kids.
Also I just was Wikipediaing Redwall and it turns out there was a TV show at some point?

Yes, there was a TV show! I used to really like it, but not as much as the books. I think it's on Netflix now, actually. Or it was for a while, anyway.
There's a lot of fairly dark stuff in kids' books. And I think it's a good thing, to an extent. How else do you teach kids about things like death?

Definitely. Plus, I mean, on some level kids experience 'heavy' stuff all the time. Maybe they aren't actually locked in a tower by a wicked stepmother, but there are overprotective parents and there are schoolyard bullies and there are puppies that get run over. I'd almost argue that dark stuff in kids' books, when handled well, can help to make sense of bad things. Plus, I've never read a kid's book without a happy ending.

Good point - I think the happy ending is what makes a lot of darker stuff in kids' books not so bad. They can have that little bit of dealing with the not-so-great stuff, but there's always a happy ending, so they see that even through the bad things, life goes on and things do turn out okay in the end. Kids deal with a lot. I used to get bullied in school, but I had books to escape to. And honestly, I never even realized I was being "bullied" at the time. I just knew those other kids were being mean to me, but I had books, so I was okay.

Ok so nother question on this, Should i stick with all of the redwall stuff, and make this like believable legit canon, or just take the basic idea of it.

I think that depends on what you're going to do with it. If it's just for fun, have at it either way. If you want to see about publishing it in some form, I'd make it your own - but only if you can truly separate what you're going to do from the original Redwall canon. (Don't want to be accused of copyright infringement.) If you don't think you can separate it enough, or you really just want to write a Redwall story, you could always just write it as a Redwall fanfiction.
