Literally can't remember how I started doing this. Can't say it was reasoned out beforehand; it just happened.
Anyway I don't know how it'd work for an idea you've already got kicking around - probably you could adapt it, but I haven't tried it - however it works SO CRAZY WELL when you're just itching for a proper project to start work on and become invested in.
So what happened was I started referring to my characters as chemical names like Chlorine, Zinc, Iron, Rust, Copper, Ammonia, Tin, Plastic, etc. Then I started writing out what each 'character' sounded like which role they filled, based on what I knew about their chemical properties (ie very little, but whatever, that's what Wikipedia is for). For example Tin is shiny and malleable. Ammonia is poisonous and sleepy. Rust is insidious and horrifying. Plastic is disturbingly fake. And so on. And then just by doing that and thinking it over, connections started to form. Had some crazy good luck - turns out, in my Wikiing, that Chlorine is an oxidizing agent. Excellent, because she's trying to bring down Iron. Youtubed "Chlorine Iron reaction", and it turns out that hot Iron + Chlorine = Rust, which also works out well in what I was thinking.
Anyway it's worth a try. I've also had some luck with describing characters as cars, typefaces, and animals.

That is possibly the most unique way of coming up with characters I've ever seen. I love it. I wonder how many different categories you could use for this? There have to be tons of possibilities. Plants could be cool.
Reminds me a bit of Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn magic system, just because that also deals with metals.

Damn. O.O That's brilliant... Btw, that magic system is one of my favorites, because it's based upon a fixed amount of energy gained by ingesting otherwise harmless metals.
