You guys, I graduated from college today. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Writing, and no clue what I'm going to do with my life. No job lined up, no place of my own (I'm moving back in with my parents for the summer).
There's a part of me that feels kind of pathetic. And I think that maybe if I'd chosen a more marketable major, I'd be on my feet right now. But then I realize that it's all okay. I have learned so much about writing, improved so much over the past four years, that I might actually make it as an author. That's worth a little uncertainty, to me.
When I left my rather rural home for New York City four years ago, I thought of it as "chasing a dream." I haven't caught that dream yet, but I'm getting there. I don't know where I'll be in a few years, but I know where I am right now, and that's a pretty good place. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to practice what I love in an amazing city.
Thank you, all of you. Even if you haven't been a member of the Echo for long, you're a part of the community that helped to give me the confidence to go after that dream, and I'm closer than ever to achieving it. You let me rant about difficult professors and gush about the amazing ones, you read my work and helped me improve, and you were a steady confidence booster, the one place I knew that I could come and be sure that I would find someone to cheer me up when I was feeling down about my writing. So thank you.

We got to read a bunch of great writing, for free... and you're thanking us? ;D
Just kidding, I know what you mean. And counter-thanks: as the most experienced member of our little hangout, you've helped us a ton.
Even though you're not leaving the Echo or anything, best of luck!

I of course know nothing about this stuff, but my GUESS is, you'll be way happier making 25k a year doing something you love than 100k doing something you hate - or worse, something you don't feel anything about.
Also some thanks of my own: thank you for finding the time and motivation to give good critiques even though you're busy and stressed about life and stuff. Thanks for putting up with me, and thanks for holding a community together for years, because honestly the community is 80% of the reason I'm here.
And you really are a good writer, by the way. I heard something once, that artists are just people with good taste. Even if they're not yet capable of producing good stuff, they can recognize it when they see it. I'm good writer yet, but I can still see it in others. I don't believe in luck but I believe in you.
Have a good summer man!

Haha. Don't worry, Raphael - I'm sure I won't be able to resist bragging when I get published. You'll know. That's what I was thinking, Zoom - do something I love, so that I won't be miserable down the line. I could never be happy not writing. The community is my favorite part of this site. Always has been. Thank you guys. You all rock.
