I keep a notebook by my bed, but if the idea is good enough, I keep thinking about it and having to write new elements down, and eventually it makes more sense to just get up I think there's something about purposefully trying to empty your mind (so you can sleep) that lets the ideas come. They're like stray cats or something: "Let them come to you"

I'm the same way. Sometimes I can get away with jotting down a few notes about the idea. But then, that usually turns into writing half a story in my journal. You're also more likely to remember dreams you've had when you're almost asleep. Being in the same state of mind allows the memories to come to the surface.

Hey, cool! Didn't know that. I do think though that creativity is just memories, remixed.

I typically get ideas from history ;D But I keep journals near me too. I'm a journal horder, lol. I refer spiral notebooks, short and fat, though--not those typical 70 page college rule notebooks one might buy for school ^.^
I counted and I have 21 journals--about half are used-up.

And then there are lucid dreams. That baisically if done right allow you to enter right into the world of your story!

I don't have lucid dreams my sister does. My dreams can be really weird at times. Like my recent dream was that I lost all my clothes and had no memory of anything and went to a doctor's office for help and a nurse took my blood pressure on my leg. O.o

My bff and I have been trying for about a year now to lucid dream reliably. I've only had a few so far, but I'm getting there! I get so frustrated at how much time I waste sleeping; so it would be great for so many reasons to be able to do that. Like killing...let's see, three birds with one stone. I've been keeping an illustrated dream journal, which helps, but I've been lazy and only recorded the really important / interesting ones. Gotta get on that. I feel like there's something HUGE to be discovered here, I just have to work at it.
"I dream way more during the day then at night..... " Deeeeeeeep, man.

Ah, I have so many journals. My favorites are the softcover moleskines. Sometimes I wish that I could lucid dream, other times I'm glad I don't. My dreams tend to have plots on their own, so it's cool to see where they go without my consciously directing them.

Moleskines...mmmmm, so smoooth...
Yeah, I've gotten some great ideas from normal dreams, but the thing with mastering lucid dreams is that you can choose to fall back into regular sleep.

I found more scarily accurate things: This one and this one. (Some spoilers for various fandoms in the second one, though. Most notably the end of the third book of the Hunger Games, though the video mentions bits of various fandoms.)

I like the video. "If you have chocolate, plop it in our laps and book it."

Haha, that was definitely my favorite line. I tend to go through certain phases of the Aftershock after I finish writing something, too. Definitely did when I finished my thesis.
